Where to Find Lavender Fields in the Verdon? Valensole Guide

Where to Find Lavender Fields in the Verdon? Valensole Guide

Valensole: The Heart of Lavender in Upper Provence

Recognized as one of the largest plateaus in France, the Plateau de Valensole is located within the Verdon Regional Natural Park, just a short drive from the main canyon and its turquoise lakes. Sitting at an altitude of 590 meters and stretching over 800 km², the territory covers nearly 12,700 hectares of stunning agricultural land.

  1. Beyond lavender cultivation, this rich soil is ideal for growing:
  2. Durum wheat (creating gorgeous golden fields next to the purple ones)
  3. Olive trees and truffles
  4. Almond orchards
  5. Clary sage, a biennial aromatic plant heavily used for its medicinal and perfume qualities, which flowers just before the lavandin.

 A Landscape for Every Season

The plateau changes its colors beautifully throughout the year. In March, snow-capped peaks and blossoming almond trees frame the plains. By July, the scenery shifts into a dazzling mix of lavandin blue and golden wheat crops. In November, the deep ochre of ploughed earth contrasts sharply with the crisp winter sky. Scattered throughout the fields, traditional stone huts (cabanons) and historic dovecotes stand as charming testaments to local rural heritage.

The Lavender Route: A Scenic Driving Itinerary

By early July, the air on the Valensole Plateau is filled with an unforgettable sweet perfume. The endless fields ripple in shades of mauve and violet, making it an absolute paradise for photographers and road-trippers.

By driving along the designated Routes de la Lavande (Lavender Routes), you can explore this unique terroir, meet passionate local producers, and stop at safe roadside areas to snap iconic photos. Along the way, traditional distilleries and local museums open their doors to reveal the ancient secrets of this multi-virtued plant.

When is the Lavender Flowering Season in Valensole?

The blooming window is beautiful but short, so timing your visit is essential:

  1. The Best Window: The flowering season generally runs from mid-June to the end of July, depending on yearly weather conditions and sunshine.
  2. The Harvest: Harvesting (la coupe) on the Valensole Plateau typically starts around mid-July. Once harvested, the fields take on a completely different, rugged look, though the plateau remains magnificent in any season!

Lavender vs. Lavandin: What is the Difference?

While wandering through the fields, you will mainly encounter two distinct plants:

  1. Fine Lavender (True Lavender): Grows naturally at higher altitudes between 500 and 1,500 meters. This delicate plant is highly prized in fine perfumery and aromatherapy for its soothing, healing, and disinfecting medicinal properties.
  2. Lavandin: A robust hybrid clone with a stronger, slightly camphorated scent. It yields significantly more essential oil per kilogram of flowers than true lavender. It thrives at lower altitudes and makes up the vast, uniform rows commonly seen stretching across the valleys.

 The Legendary Valensole Lavender Festival

The Fête de la Lavande in Valensole is world-famous! Held every year around July 15th, this vibrant traditional festival celebrates the height of the harvest season with a packed cultural program:

  1. Free visits to the lavender, sunflower fields, and active distilleries.
  2. Traditional lavender distillation demonstrations using an authentic 19th-century alembic still.
  3. Open-air exhibitions of vintage and modern agricultural harvesting machinery.
  4. Specialized "lavender-themed" menus in local village restaurants.
  5. A massive artisanal market featuring over 140 local professionals selling exclusive, pure lavender crafts, honey, and soaps.
  6. Folkloric dances, live music, and performances by the Lavandières de Valensole singing traditional village songs.

A Scenic Spot with International Renown

Over the past two decades, Valensole has gained massive global popularity, particularly with international travelers.

  1. The Screen Impact: In 2006, the plateau served as the romantic backdrop for several key scenes in the ultra-popular Chinese television drama Dreams Link (一帘幽梦 - "Yī Lián Yōu Mèng"). Broadcasted across China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong to hundreds of millions of viewers, this romantic series turned Provence and the Valensole fields into an absolute dream destination for couples.
  2. High-Fashion Spotlight: In 2019, famous French fashion designer Jacquemus chose a vibrant pink runway slicing through a vast Valensole lavender field to present his iconic 10th-anniversary collection, sealing the plateau’s status as a modern cultural landmark.
