Full Itinerary of the Expedition

09:00 AM – The Briefing: Departure into the Unknown

The journey begins at the Chalet de la Maline parking lot. Here, you will meet your expert river guide, Alex. After a thorough run-through of the route and the distribution of your premium technical gear, we pack our individual expedition bags. Feel the excitement build: today, you aren't just looking at the canyon; you are conquering it from the inside.

The Approach: In the Footsteps of Martel

To earn the river, you must first walk down into its core. We follow a spectacular section of the legendary Blanc-Martel trail to reach the water.

  1. Duration : Approximately 45 minutes of downhill hiking.
  2. The Challenge : An immersive hike with your technical gear packed onto your back (approximately 11 to 12 kg including your wetsuit, safety gear, deflated boat, and picnic).
  3. The View : Overlooking the Verdon from above, you will witness the raw power of the Couloir Samson and La Turbine rapids. This is where the sheer, monumental scale of the canyon truly hits you.

The Navigation: Alone in the Deep

Once at the water’s edge, the magic begins. After a comprehensive safety briefing and a breakdown of specific packrafting techniques, you will glide onto the famous turquoise waters.
Did you know? The deep section we explore is completely inaccessible by foot. Packrafting grants you a rare privilege: absolute solitude beneath dizzying limestone cliffs. The route is a perfect blend of adrenaline and contemplation:

Playful Rapids : Accessible whitewater thrills to spice up the descent and test your steering.

Calm Reaches : Moments to look up and feel humbled by ancient stone walls rising 700 meters straight above your head.

Wilderness Lunch : A well-deserved picnic break on a secret river beach, accessible exclusively by water.

The Hidden Gem: The Artuby Canyon

The absolute highlight of the afternoon awaits. We veer off the main river to explore the Artuby Canyon, a spectacular, narrow tributary where time stands still. We paddle and wade up this wild branch to discover unique geological formations—a true sanctuary of biodiversity far from human civilization.

The Ascent: The Final Push

Our river navigation ends at the iconic Estellier suspension footbridge. Once the rafts are deflated, rolled up, and tucked back into your backpacks, we begin our return to the "world above."

  1. The Climb : A steep 400-meter vertical elevation gain to climb out of the gorge and reach the Chalet de la Maline.
  2. The Effort : About 1 hour of sustained, physical uphill hiking, rewarded by breathtaking, panoramic views of the entire canyon path you just traveled.

Booking, Regulations & Dam Schedules

  1. Dam Conditions : This specific canyon expedition is only possible when the upstream EDF dams are closed (low water flow rules), allowing safe navigation through the narrowest sections of the Grand Canyon.
  2. Seasonality : Available on reservation exclusively during the spring and autumn months.

Required Physical Level & Prerequisites

  1. Difficulty : High / Sustained. This is an intense, multi-sport outdoor day combining a heavy-pack backpack hike, active whitewater paddling, and a steep mountain ascent.
  2. Prerequisites : You must be in excellent physical shape, possess good hiking stamina, and be completely free from severe vertigo or fear of heights for the final climb out. Because you are captaining your own individual craft in moving water, prior paddling experience (kayaking, canoeing, or packrafting) is strictly mandatory, and you must know how to swim confidently.
  3. What to bring : A packed picnic lunch, plenty of water, a swimsuit, and a sturdy pair of lace-up running shoes or athletic trainers. Flimsy water shoes are strictly forbidden.
