Canyoning trip on the Haut verdon

Canyoning at the Torrent de la Lance: The Sporty Challenge of the Haut Verdon

Calling all thrill-seekers, vertical enthusiasts, and lovers of true wilderness! The Torrent de la Lance is one of the most athletic, wild, and committed canyoning trips in the region.

Located in the magnificent Haut Verdon valley, right next to the fortified village of Colmars-les-Alpes, this flagship canyon offers a full-day, ultra-complete descent in a purely alpine environment filled with crystal-clear water.

An Alpine Expedition Reserved for Seasoned Sportspersons

Tackling La Lance means treating yourself to 6 to 7 hours of a true wilderness odyssey. Between big technical jumps and vertical abseils sprayed by waterfalls, this demanding course requires you to be in peak physical shape. It is the perfect match for dynamic individuals who already have canyoning experience and are completely comfortable with heights.

  1. Required Profile: Reserved exclusively for people with excellent physical fitness, prior canyoning experience, and absolutely no fear of heights (vertigo). Strong swimming skills are mandatory.
  2. Key Highlights: The contrasting atmospheres (sunny rock slabs followed by mysterious narrow gorges), the final grand abseil from a suspended anchor station, and the majestic backdrop of the Haut Verdon fir forests.
  3. Looking for a slightly less committed full-day trip? If you want a great water-based day without an exhausting approach hike, discover the cathedral-like scenery of the Clue du Riolan.

Your Day Itinerary: Description & Logistics

1. The Briefing and the Grand Approach Hike (1h15)

The adventure begins early in Colmars-les-Alpes, located about a 1-hour drive from Castellane. There, you will meet your expert guide, Alex.

Please note: The meeting point is directly on the activity site (and NOT at our base in Castellane).
Landmark: Parking du Pont de la Lance, 04370 Colmars-les-Alpes

After distributing top-tier technical gear and packing your lunch into individual watertight drums, the effort kicks off with a steep approach hike lasting a solid hour. Fortunately, the ascent is mostly shaded by fir trees, and the beauty of the alpine scenery will quickly make you forget your burning thighs as you reach the starting point, perched at an altitude of 1,600 meters!

2. First Part: Limestone Slabs and Giant Pools

We suit up in our neoprene wetsuits and jump straight into the whitewater:

  1. The descent starts on beautifully sculpted limestone slabs that quickly lead to the first obstacle: a superb 15-meter abseil (optional).
  2. This first section, fairly open and bathed in sunlight, offers a true festival of jumps into huge pools of pure water. Pure fun!
  3. The change of atmosphere: The canyon suddenly closes in and darkens. You enter deep rock gorges where technical abseils and swimming sections chain together before reaching the Pont de la Lance in the forest for a well-deserved lunch break.

3. Second Part: Whitewater Cascades and Explosive Finale

No time to fall asleep! The second section, though shorter, gets serious when it comes to verticality:

  1. You will cross a succession of magnificent mountain waterfalls by jumping or setting up ropes for vertical abseils reaching up to 25 meters high.
  2. The final bouquet: The highlight of the show awaits you at the very last obstacle. You will launch yourself from a suspended anchor station for a dizzying abseil right above a huge pool of churning water. A spectacular finish and one last memorable jump!
  3. A short 20-minute return walk will bring you quietly back to the cars... just in time to enjoy a well-earned nap.

Gear & Preparing for Your Expedition Day

To help our team prepare your custom neoprene gear, please send us the height, weight, and shoe size of all participants in advance.

  1. What to pack: Your swimsuit, a water bottle (1.5L), and your lunch for the day (favor high-energy, compact foods that easily fit into our watertight drums).
  2. Strict footwear requirement: Between the intensive alpine approach hike and the slippery rocks of the torrent, a pair of closed, lace-up sneakers (trainers) with good grip (trail or running style) is mandatory. Thin water shoes, beach slippers, or sandals are strictly prohibited; failure to bring appropriate footwear will result in being refused access to the activity for your own safety.
