Definitions and Difficulty Levels
Aqua Trekking (Rando Aquatique)
This is a fun, accessible, and water-based activity that consists of traveling down the riverbed primarily through floating (lying flat on your back, letting your life jacket carry you down the currents).
- The Level: Generally easy to moderate. It is the ultimate family-friendly activity, perfect for an introduction to the river (open to kids from age 6 to 8 depending on the route), as long as everyone can swim.
- The Obstacles: You will alternate between floating sections, sliding down natural water shoots, and cliff jumps. The golden rule: all jumps are 100% optional! You climb up to the rock before jumping, allowing everyone to choose their own height or simply walk around.
- The Technique: No ropes, no rappelling, and no climbing experience required.
Canyoning
Canyoning is a much more technical, vertical, and physically committing sport. You don’t just follow a river; you descend deep, narrow gorges by combining hiking, swimming, down-climbing, and vertical rope techniques.
- The Level: More athletic and challenging. It requires a decent physical condition and is not recommended for anyone prone to severe vertigo.
- The Obstacles: The canyon walls are vertical and narrow, meaning obstacles are often mandatory: tall vertical waterfalls, high jumps, and tight passages under boulders.
- The Technique: Technical gear and ropes are mandatory to safely descend cliffs and waterfalls (rappelling/abseiling, ziplining, and traversing via safety lines).

The Gear & Techniques for Aqua Trekking

Landscapes and Locations: Where do we go?
The setting for these two activities is entirely different:
Aqua Trekking: Inside the Grand Canyon
This is the star activity of the Verdon! It is the only trip that allows you to explore the deep, secret, and majestic inner sections of the Grand Canyon where boats cannot fit. Trips leave near the Point Sublime. We offer 3 routes:
- The Couloir Samson (The Classic): Deep, narrow, with great floating currents. The true heart of the canyon!
- The Tusset Route: Located just upstream, perfect for families and young kids.
- Samson-Trescaire: A full-day version for hardcore hikers.
Crucial Calendar Info: Aqua Trekking inside the main Verdon river bed relies directly on the EDF dam schedules. In July and August, it runs every day except Tuesdays and Fridays (which are reserved for boating activities like Rafting). The season runs from May to mid-October, weather permitting.
Canyoning: In the Side Clues and Mountain Streams
Canyoning takes place in narrow, steep tributaries outside the main river. Around the Verdon, you will find:
- "Dry" technical canyons like the vertiginous Ravin de Mainmorte.
- Spring-only canyons like the Riou in Moustiers-Sainte-Marie.
- Beautiful high-alpine streams in the Upper Verdon (La Lance).
For optimal water levels year-round, we take you to the Haut Jabron or neighboring Alpes-Maritimes region, a world-class canyoning paradise (Gours du Ray, Saint-Auban, Riolan), perfect for both beginners and thrill-seekers.
Which Adventurer Are You?
- Choose Aqua Trekking if: You are traveling with kids, looking for a refreshing and playful day out, or if your number one goal is to experience the jaw-dropping landscapes of the Grand Canyon from water level. It is also a fantastic stepping stone before trying canyoning later!
- Choose Canyoning if: You love vertical heights, crave adrenaline, want to face the challenge of rappelling down a roaring waterfall, and are looking to push your physical limits in a rugged wilderness setting.
