Culture and Local Heritage Under Cover
If the clouds roll in, it is the perfect time to open the doors of Castellane's beautiful museums, without even leaving the village center.
Maison Nature & Patrimoines: The Sirens and Fossils Museum
Located right on the main square (Place Marcel Sauvaire), this cultural hub brings several fascinating exhibitions under one roof. It is home to the famous Musée des Sirènes et Fossiles.
Did you know that 40 million years ago, the entire Castellane region was covered by a warm, tropical sea? In this museum, you can observe impressive fossils of Sirenians (the ancient ancestors of our modern manatees) discovered in the surrounding mountains. It is a fun, highly visual, and family-friendly visit—perfect for kids to understand the geological history of our towering cliffs.
A 100% Sheltered Adventure: The Underground Via Souterrata
Are you getting restless inside and disappointed about canceled outdoor sports? We have the perfect secret plan for adventurers, located less than a 45-minute drive from Castellane.
Cave Ferrata at the Moulière Adventure Park
Head over to the charming little village of Caille to discover a truly unique activity: the Via Souterrata. Imagine a classic via ferrata route—complete with footbridges, monkey bridges, and ladders—but fully installed... inside a real natural cave!
Equipped with a harness, lanyards, and a headlamp, you progress safely through the heart of the rock, surrounded by stalactites and stalagmites. The temperature underground remains constant, and most importantly, you are completely protected from the weather. It is an accessible caving adventure, ideal for getting an adrenaline rush even when it rains.
Did You Know? Rain Doesn't (Always) Cancel Whitewater Activities!
This is the question we get asked the most at the Buena Vista Rafting base: "If it rains, is our rafting trip canceled?"
You’re Getting Wet Anyway: Dare to Raft in the Rain!
The answer is no—quite the contrary! Unless there is a violent thunderstorm or a sudden flash flood warning that threatens safety, a light rain does not stop us from navigating.
Once you are geared up in our thick 5 mm neoprene wetsuits, jackets, and helmets, you are going to get wet anyway. Navigating the Verdon River in the rain offers a completely unique and magical atmosphere: the mist clings to the giant cliffs, the water colors shift, and the canyon takes on the mysterious look of a tropical rainforest. It is a memorable experience that true adventurers absolute love!
Treat Yourself to a Cozy Local Food Break
When it's gray outside, comfort often comes from the plate. Castellane is home to wonderful local artisans and restaurants that will make you completely forget about the weather.
Spotlighting Regional Produce
Take advantage of a quieter day to stroll through the local shops (Maison de Pays) in the village center. It is the perfect opportunity to taste and bring home:
- Lavender honey from our local beekeepers.
- Goat cheese from the Haut-Verdon valleys.
- Craft beers brewed with pure mountain water.
Take a seat in one of the many bistros or tearooms in the center to chat with the locals. They always have a great anecdote to share about the valley or a traditional card game of Contrée to play.
Take a Scenic Rainy Day Road Trip Around the Canyon
If walking under the raindrops doesn't appeal to you, why not discover the immensities of the canyon from the comfort of your dry vehicle?
The Route des Crêtes from a Dramatic Angle
Driving the famous Route des Crêtes loop (starting from La Palud-sur-Verdon) or rolling up to the Point Sublime during a rainy day is a spectacular sight in its own right. The low clouds slice through the mountain tops, creating a dramatic, grand atmosphere. The viewpoints, usually packed with tourists, are deserted, offering you an exclusive, one-on-one encounter with the Grand Canyon.
Safety note: Drive slowly! Rain can make mountain roads slippery, and small gravel or pebbles can occasionally roll down onto the asphalt.
Prepare for the Sun's Return with Buena Vista Rafting!
Weather disturbances never last very long in Upper Provence. By tomorrow, the sun will most likely be back, making the emerald waters of the river sparkle once again.
Don't stay stuck in your accommodation: use rainy days to plan the rest of your holiday. It is the perfect time to book your spots for our flagship routes, because as soon as the blue sky returns, our schedules fill up fast!
