What is a Packraft? When Inflatables Meet Micro-Adventure
A blend of "pack" (backpack) and "raft", a packraft is a new-generation inflatable kayak designed to fold down small enough to fit inside a standard backpack. Gone are the heavy logistics of rigid boats: these portable rafts allow explorers to combine land exploration (hiking or mountain biking) with wild river descents in a single day.
Built using high-tech, highly durable, and tear-resistant materials (such as Thermoplastic Polyurethane - TPU), a packraft can be fully inflated in just a few minutes using a lightweight inflation bag or a small hand pump. Once deflated, it takes up no more room than a lightweight camping tent and weighs only a few kilograms.
Packraft vs Traditional Kayak: Understanding the Key Differences
While packrafts and inflatable kayak-rafts share the same seated position and use a double-bladed paddle, they differ in several key ways:
- Weight and Transport: Packrafts are the ultimate tools for backcountry independence. Weighing between 2 to 4 kg (4 to 9 lbs), they easily fit inside a backpack, allowing you to access remote waters where traditional, heavy kayaks requiring roof racks or trailers could never go.
- Stability and Handling: Thanks to their wide side tubes and flat hull design, packrafts are incredibly stable and forgiving of steering mistakes. This makes them highly reassuring for complete beginners, yet agile and playful for experienced paddlers.
- Terrain: Packrafts excel beautifully on calm waters and Class I to III rivers, whereas rigid kayaks remain preferred for high-consequence, fast-moving Class IV and V whitewater.
Packrafting Ethics: Navigating the Verdon with "Leave No Trace"
Because packrafting allows us to reach untouched, wild, and secluded areas of the river canyon, the global packraft community is deeply committed to environmental conservation.
At Buena Vista Rafting, we proudly practice and teach the strict rules of "Leave No Trace". The Verdon Gorge is a fragile ecosystem. We make it a point of honor to carry out all our trash, respect the local wildlife (including the grand vultures nesting in the cliffs), and minimize our physical footprint on the riverbanks during launches and portages.
