Verdon River Flow & EDF Water Releases: The Complete Guide

Verdon River Flow & EDF Water Releases: The Complete Guide

Why Does the Verdon River Flow Change?

The canyon's water levels do not just rely on local weather; they are carefully managed by upstream infrastructure.

  1. The Castillon Dam: Located just above Castellane, this massive dam acts as the master switch, giving the official "green light" for water releases into the river.
  2. EDF Regulation: Water is released through the dam primarily to generate clean renewable electricity or to meet agricultural irrigation needs downstream.
  3. The "Débit Réservé" (Minimum Ecological Flow): Even when the dam's main gates are completely closed, a mandatory minimum flow is constantly maintained to protect the local flora, fauna, and aquatic life.

When Do the EDF Water Releases Happen?

The schedule varies significantly depending on the time of year:

In July and August (Peak Summer Season)

To guarantee optimal conditions for whitewater sports, EDF regularly schedules water releases every Tuesday and Friday. These are our dedicated days for high-adrenaline activities like Rafting, Canoe/Kayak-Raft, and Hydrospeed.

Spring and Autumn (Off-Peak Seasons)

During the rest of the year, releases can be more frequent due to snowmelt and seasonal rainfall, but they are much less predictable over the long term.

Real-Time Information: The official dam release schedule is usually confirmed by EDF the evening before for the following day, around 5:30 PM.

How Water Flow Impacts Your Whitewater Activities

At Buena Vista Rafting, we have developed different activities specifically tailored to match the rhythm of the river:

When the Gates Are Open (High Flow)

This is the ultimate playground for Rafting, Canoe/Kayak-Raft, and Hydrospeed! The current is powerful, carrying the boats smoothly through the rapids and delivering thrilling whitewater sensations.

When the Gates Are Closed (Low Flow)

The Verdon becomes remarkably calm, peaceful, and crystal clear. This is the absolute perfect time for our famous Aqua Trekking (Floating) tours! We take full advantage of the low flow to safely explore the deepest, most majestic parts of the Grand Canyon while floating on our backs.

How to Know the Water Flow for Your Booking?

There is absolutely no need to stress over complex technical charts! At Buena Vista, we receive the official EDF forecasts every single evening. We automatically adapt our routes and schedules to guarantee you have the best possible experience on the water. As long as the sun is shining, there is always an amazing adventure waiting for you.

Outside of July and August, we always plan with flexibility in mind:

  1. Dam Open: We go navigation style (Rafting, Kayaking)!
  2. Dam Closed: We go exploration style (Aqua Trekking or Canyoning)!

Spring Bonus: The Rise of Packrafting!

During the spring, the baseline ecological flow is twice as high as in the summer. This allows us to offer navigation trips in Packrafts—ultra-light, modern inflatable kayaks that enable you to paddle down the Verdon even when the main dam gates are closed!

Got a Question About This Summer's Schedule?

The daily flow of the Verdon is our expertise. If you want to make sure you select the activity that perfectly matches the water levels on the day of your visit, the simplest way is to contact us directly. We will let you know whether we will be paddling down the rapids or floating through the Grand Canyon!

Good to Know: Our Canyoning trips are completely unaffected by these dam variations, as they take place in independent mountain torrents and streams separate from the main Verdon River bed.

Note: The water release calendar provided by EDF is strictly tentative and can be modified at any time without prior notice for safety or hydraulic management reasons.
