Verdon Rafting Gear Guide: What to Wear & Bring | Buena Vista

Technical Equipment Provided by the Club

As soon as you arrive at our base in Castellane, we equip you from head to toe with top-tier gear that meets strict CE safety standards:

  1. The Neoprene Wetsuit: Essential for retaining body heat. We provide full-body wetsuits or "Long Johns" (sleeveless) that are systematically washed, maintained, and disinfected after every single trip.
  2. The Life Jacket (PFD): Tailored to your specific body shape, this Personal Protective Equipment ensures high buoyancy specifically rated for whitewater rivers.
  3. The Helmet: A mandatory safety element designed to protect your head from any accidental impacts against rocks or paddles.
  4. The Paddle: Your engine! We provide lightweight, robust paddles perfectly sized to your height.

What You Must Imperatively Bring

While we handle all the specialized technical gear, you need to bring a few personal items to ensure a comfortable day on the river:

1. Swimwear & Proper Footwear

  1. The Swimsuit: To be worn directly underneath your neoprene wetsuit (we highly recommend avoiding baggy swim shorts, as they can bunch up and become very uncomfortable under tight neoprene).
  2. The Shoes: This is the most crucial point. You must wear closed-toe athletic shoes (like sneakers/trainers) that lace up tightly and secure well to your feet.
  3. Strict Warning: Flip-flops, sandals, slides, or thin slip-on water shoes are strictly prohibited for safety reasons.

2. Essential Personal Accessories

  1. A Glasses Strap: If you wear prescription glasses or sunglasses, a retention strap is absolutely indispensable unless you want to offer them as a gift to the bottom of the Verdon!
  2. Sun Protection: Apply sunscreen before the session starts, especially on your face.

3. Post-Rafting Comfort (To Leave in Your Vehicle)

Once the descent is over, you will be very glad to find your dry belongings waiting for you at the base. Don't forget to pack:

  1. A large beach towel to dry off.
  2. A complete change of dry clothes.
  3. A small snack or treat, which is always highly appreciated, especially if you are traveling with kids!

Frequently Asked Questions (Gear FAQ)

Can I bring a camera or phone on the raft?

We strongly advise against bringing any valuable items on board the raft. If you own an action camera like a GoPro, you are welcome to bring it, provided you have your own secure helmet mount or chest harness (please note that we do not supply the mounts or clips).

Is it mandatory to know how to swim?

Yes. It is strictly mandatory to be able to swim at least 25 meters and be completely comfortable with immersing your head underwater to participate in any of our rafting or canoe-rafting activities.
