Rafting vs Aqua Trekking in Verdon: How to Choose?

Rafting vs Aqua Trekking in Verdon: How to Choose?

The "Funnel" Rule: Understanding the Geography of the Verdon

To clearly understand the difference between Rafting and Aqua Trekking, you need to visualize the shape of the Gorges. At our base, we often use the image of a funnel to explain it to our guests.

  1. The Wide Section (Rafting): From Castellane down to the Point Sublime, the river flows through a valley that is open at first and then progressively narrows. This is the upper and wide section of the Gorges. The riverbed is spacious, allowing large watercraft like rafts to navigate, splash through the rapids, and slalom between the boulders. Raft navigation ends at the Point Sublime, right at the entrance of the Couloir Samson.
  2. The Neck of the Funnel (Aqua Trekking): Right after the Point Sublime, the Verdon rushes into the Grand Canyon itself. The limestone cliffs rise abruptly for hundreds of meters and tighten in a spectacular way. Here, the riverbed becomes so narrow and cluttered with giant boulders that rafts cannot pass. The absolute best way to explore this secret, majestic heart of the river is by swimming down it in a wetsuit: this is the kingdom of Aqua Trekking.

Your Two Options for Exploring the Verdon Gorge

Option 1: Rafting – Teamwork, Splashes, and Fun on the Water

Rafting is experienced sitting aboard a stable, unsinkable inflatable boat, propelled by paddles under the commands of a professional guide stationed at the back.

  1. The Setting: You travel through the wide section of the Gorges. The landscape is breathtaking, lush, and wild, offering beautiful views of the surrounding peaks before finishing right in front of the towering cliffs at the entrance of the Grand Canyon.
  2. The Vibe: This is the ultimate team-building and bonding activity! There are plenty of laughs as you paddle in rhythm, splash through the waves of the Barre Saint-Jean, and enjoy calmer sections where you can jump into the water right from the raft.
  3. Who is it for? Perfect for families (accessible to children from 6 or 8 years old depending on the route), groups of friends, bachelor/bachelorette parties, or anyone looking for thrills without necessarily spending 3 hours with their head underwater.

Option 2: Aqua Trekking – Deep Immersion in the Spectacular Grand Canyon

Aqua trekking (locally called Rando Aqua) is not canyoning—there are no ropes or rappelling involved. Equipped with a thick neoprene wetsuit, a helmet, and a life jacket, you simply float on your back and let the river current guide you downstream.

  1. The Setting: Absolutely grandiose and exclusive. Starting from the Point Sublime (Couloir Samson), you enter the deepest, narrowest, and most spectacular section of the Verdon Gorges on foot and by swimming. Sunlight plays along the giant cliff walls, making you feel beautifully tiny in the middle of this natural masterpiece.
  2. The Vibe: A perfect blend of adrenaline and total disconnection. You float with the current, slide down natural rock rapids on your back like a waterslide, and the more daring participants can enjoy optional cliff jumps (never mandatory) from the rocks.
  3. Who is it for? For those seeking majestic scenery and a wild, immersive nature experience. You need to be comfortable in the water and enjoy swimming. It is also the perfect activity for days when the EDF dams are closed, which prevents rafting navigation!
