Rafting near Lake Sainte-Croix: Best Routes & Guide

The Best Rafting Routes on the Verdon River

The whitewater action takes place between Castellane and the entrance of the Grand Canyon (at the Point Sublime). We offer several routes tailored to your experience and expectations:

  1. The Discovery Run (8 km - approx. 1.5 hours on the water): The ultimate choice for families (from age 7) and complete beginners. A fun, gentle introduction to learn how to read the river currents.
  2. The Pont de Soleil Run (12 km - approx. 2.5 hours on the water): A longer, more energetic trip designed for those who want a great balance of breathtaking scenery and intense rapids.
  3. The Point Sublime Run (22 km - Full day or half-day): The ultimate Verdon experience! Reserved for thrill-seekers, this route takes you right to the gates of the Grand Canyon, including a memorable picnic break on a wild river beach.

What to Expect on Your Rafting Trip with Buena Vista

Don't worry about a thing; we manage everything from A to Z at our comfortable river base in Castellane:

  1. Gear Up: Welcome to our base! After meeting our team, we fit you with top-quality gear (full neoprene wetsuit, life jacket, helmet, and paddle).
  2. Safety Briefing: Before hitting the water, your state-certified guide will explain essential safety rules and paddle commands so you can navigate effectively as a team.
  3. The Descent: Time to splash! Your trip will alternate between technical rapid crossings and calm floats to admire the towering limestone cliffs.
  4. The Shuttle Return: At the end of the river run, our private shuttles are waiting to drive you directly back to our base in Castellane.

When is the Best Time for Rafting?

Our navigation season runs from mid-April to late October. In the spring, snowmelt typically guarantees high, sporty, and natural water levels.

  1. In July and August, the water flow is regulated by the upstream EDF hydroelectric dam. These water releases usually occur every Tuesday and Friday. Those are your dedicated rafting days!
  2. The Buena Vista Alternative: If the dam is closed on other days of the week, don't worry! The lower water level becomes absolutely perfect for Aqua Trekking (Floating), a unique and magical way to swim and float through the deep Grand Canyon.
