History, Fine Pottery, and the Legend of the Hanging Star
While Moustiers' roots date back to the Gallo-Roman era, the village truly flourished in the Middle Ages when a community of monks settled in the cliffs. Over the centuries, it gained worldwide fame for its ancestral craft of fine tin-glazed pottery (faïence). You can still admire and purchase this traditional earthenware today in the many artisan workshops hidden throughout the village's historic center. Walking along its narrow, cobblestone streets feels like stepping back in time, surrounded by ancient fountains, colorful façades, and the fragrant air of Provence.
The mystery of the hanging star
If you look straight up between the two massive cliffs overlooking the village, you will spot a golden star suspended in mid-air. Local legend says that a medieval knight, the Sire de Blacas, was captured during the Crusades and vowed to hang a chain and a star dedicated to the Virgin Bell if he ever returned home alive. Centuries later, the star still hangs high above the void, adding an enchanting touch of mystery to this dramatic landscape.
